Salazar kills Bush drilling plan
Interior Secretary says that we need bring sanity back into our energy policy. By “sanity” he means citing 30-year old estimates of reserves and doing nothing to develop our domestic natural resources.
For how long are we going to be told that it takes “ten years” to produce a drop of oil? Another ten years? That would be the 3d ten-year span.
Salazar seemed concerned about perceptions:
The secretary said the previous administration’s plan did not take into consideration the views of states and coastal communities, nor a need to better understand what energy resources are at stake, especially off the Atlantic coast where oil and gas estimates are more than three decades old.
He criticized “foot dragging” by Bush in pushing for renewable energy development in coastal waters, yet seems to have forgotten the approval by Bush of a wind farm in Ted Kennedy’s back yard. It’s 130 giant turbines across 25 miles of federal waters in Nantucket Sound. But, oh yeah, the Teddy Factor:
A leading foe of the $1 billion project is Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., an early and influential backer of Obama’s presidential bid. A strong proponent is Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a close friend of Obama and a source for some of his best campaign speech lines.
Sounds like Obama has some talking to do.
Back to Salazar:
Salazar directed Interior Department scientists to produce new reports on how much oil and gas might be found off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and extended the public comment period on a new five-year leasing plan to September. He said he will hold regional meetings to get comments from the public before continuing with an offshore energy plan.
What’s the practical impact of this? Jack Gerard, president of the American Petroleum Institute, which represents the large oil companies, said Salazar’s announcement “means that development of our offshore resources could be stalled indefinitely.”
This follows the scrapping the lease of 77 parcels of federal land for oil and gas drilling in Utah’s redrock country. Sounds like hope to me, eh?
Every day we delay is more money flowing out of our economy, not creating jobs here, and largely going in the hands of countries that fund terrorists.
How does that fit into “sanity,” Secretary Salazar?
