Ronald Reagan’s Christmas address 28 years ago tonight

It was December 23, 1981, and the Gipper was finishing his first year in office. Indeed, he had been president for exactly as long as Obama has been president today. Reagan’s approval rating was at 49% and the country was in a deep recession, just as it is now.

Despite all that, listen to Reagan and see if you hear doom and gloom, sky is falling, catastrophe-awaits-just-around-the-corner rhetoric, like we do today. As you listen, is there any doubt in your mind that he thinks his country is the greatest place on Earth and the wellspring of freedom for all? Is there any hint that he is not proud of his country? He celebrates American faith, families, and exceptionalism.

What are the odds that Barack Obama would ever give a speech like this?

Merry Christmas from one proud American to all other proud Americans and your families.

  1. Few could come anywhere near Ronald Reagan. But the current placeholder of his office is a disgrace to it and the principles upon which it was founded.

  3. Ohhh, what many of us would give to get another Reagan. Our nation really needs someone great to step up to the plate in 2012, but I honestly don’t see that person right now.

  4. Reagan believed the country needed itself to be saved, not more government. Obama believes the country needs more government and less of itself to be saved.

  5. an american first!

wow, thank you for posting this. I was born after Reagan’s term, I had no idea about his love for America and his understanding of the uniqueness of America

You guys have truely opened my eyes, I will be reading and listening to more of Reagan’s speeceh and about his presidency.

He makes me proud to be an American, no apologies, no bowing, none of that lunatic behavior.

Boodad, I think you are rounding up to the nearest null value.

  8. Thank you, and glad you’re enjoying it. If you don’t remember Reagan and don’t know a lot about him, you’re going to appreciate what you learn. We’ve written and posted numerous pieces about him and speeches by him. Put his name in our search bar and you’ll find a wealth of info. Happy reading and Merry Christmas.

Yeah, it was pretty much a rhetorical question.
