NEWSFLASH: Iran shells Iraqi Kurdistan village
In a direct slap to Obama’s foreign policy, Iran has shelled a Kurdish village in northern Iraq. Iranian helicopters stayed on their side of the border and sent missiles for over two hours today. This event follows similar action on Saturday.
No casualties are reported at present.
Let’s wait for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to say the acts of war are “not helpful.”
Iran offers the following explanation:
The Iranian attacks followed clashes between Iran’s police and guerrillas from the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which took up arms in 1984 for an ethnic homeland in southeast Turkey.
Gunmen killed 10 Iranian police in that firefight in western Iran on April 25. Ten PJAK fighters were also killed, Iranian state media said.
Iraq calls on United States to do something:
In his turn, deputy speaker Aref Tayfour condemned continuous Iranian shelling on Kurdistan border regions noting that such actions destabilize the region’s security and stability, therefore, harm good neighboring relations. He added that this is considered as a major interference in the federal state affairs and a violation of its sovereignty.
Tayfour pointed out that the United States should interfere to stop these violations as it is considered a strategic partner to Iraq and is committed to help defend Iraq borders by virtue of the security pact signed with the government. He urged as well the government and Parliament to curb violations of national sovereignty.
The balls in your court, Obama. What now?

A strongly worded letter from the U.N. should do it. Or maybe asking the Iranians to PLEASE unclench your fist./sarc
Read my mind. If the UNSC can get something together over the next several weeks that sets forth a flexible timetable for response, action, citation for failure to comply, but no enforcement mechanism – I think we’ll be in good shape!
