Leon Panetta to head CIA

UPDATE: Politico reporting that Dianne ain’t happy: “I was not informed about the selection of Leon Panetta to be the CIA Director. I know nothing about this, other than what I’ve read,” said Senator Feinstein, who will chair the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in the 111th Congress. / “My position has consistently been that I believe the Agency is best-served by having an intelligence professional in charge at this time.”

Leon Panetta to head CIA. This oughta be interesting. Another pick just like the old picks – Jimmy Carter v2.0 in a Clinton (pant)suit.

From the House to Clinton’s Chief of Staff to CIA. He’s been killing time at the Panetta Institute: “A nonpartisan center for the study of public policy, the Panetta Institute helps our communities and our country meet the challenges of the 21st century. We work in particular to attract thoughtful young men and women to lives of public service, helping them expand their knowledge of the policy process and develop their skills as future leaders.”

His committee posts in the House were:

Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on the Budget
Chairman of the Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Domestic Marketing, Consumer Relations, and Nutrition
Chairman of the Administration Committee’s Subcommittee on Personnel and Police
Chairman of the Task Force on Domestic Hunger created by the U.S. House Select Committee on Hunger
Vice Chairman of the Caucus of Vietnam-Era Veterans in Congress
Member of the President’s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies.

So his defense/intelligence qualifications seem to reside in the lectures he hosted through the institute, such as this one: “The Role of the Military and Intelligence in National Security,” with former Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Peter Pace (USMC-Ret.); former Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command and national security and terrorism analyst for NBC News, General Barry McCaffrey (USA-Ret.); and John Arquilla, Professor of Defense Analysis at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School

At least perhaps we can expect the nutrition of agents in the field to increase – nothing like a good diet to help you surveil bad guys.

Politico gives us a little more bio (in part):

From 1964 to 1966, he served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and received the Army Commendation Medal. He worked as a U.S. Senate legislative assistant and then became Director of the U.S. Office for Civil Rights for the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, and later as Executive Assistant to the Mayor of New York City.

Currently, he co-directs the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy with a particular focus on inspiring young men and women to lives of leadership and public service. He serves on many public policy and organizational boards. Among his work, Mr. Panetta serves as Chairman of the Pew Oceans Commission and Co-Chair of the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative. He previously served as a member of the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan committee established at the urging of Congress; as a member of the Independent Task Force on Immigration and America’s Future; and as the Co-Chair of the California Council on Base Support and Retention.

So a couple of years military – never past 1st Lt. But the ocean thing sounds interesting.

Perhaps his real qualification was that he dumped Hillary early in the campaign. Bet early and often on the winner – good move, Leon. paid off.

Do you want to throw him in, or shall I ?
On the count of three; not two, nor four, nor five...the number shall be three...
That will be the center piece of Bambi's defense plan; the holy hand grenade of Antioch...
  • Justin
Blue, I mean yellowwwwwwwww!!!! (as he gets thrown into the abyss).

How can we tell if Bambi is a witch? If he weighs the same as a duck, and ducks float in water, then he must be made of wood. Which is why witches burn, of course.
  • It is quite interesting that Dianne has taken such a strong and public stance. Telling the Child who runs things, I guess.

Perhaps we should take bets on which one gets the alternate-fuel bus treatment first - Dianne or Leon.

Thing is, Panetta went to my law school - Santa Clara University. And Dianne was just up the road running SF into the ground as Mayor. Small world.

That's right - I'm hoping that Feinstein threw down a marker for a reason. I'm also hoping that Panetta's not just a proxy for the Klintonistas pursuant to some shady backroom deal, but that's about the only reasonable conclusion I can find.

I don't think the committee will do much more than ask:
    1)What is your name?
    2)What is your quest?
    3)What is your favourite colour?

With (obvious) apologies to Monty Python, I don't think the air-speed velocity of sparrows carrying coconuts,(or anything pertinent at all), will be asked...
But I do hope I'm wrong...
  • i wish i were optimistic about the confirmation hearings. i fear the pubs will just roll across the board.

but you're right. the ideal questions: tell this committee, precisely, what qualifies you for this job?
  • somehow someway this Child in Chief is looking to the clintons for everything. how sad.

This is the first truly objectively bad pick Obama has made (leaving aside Richardson, who is substantively qualified to be Commerce Sec).
Kudos to Dianne for calling it, too.
I'm afraid it's worse than stupid, and worse than simply choosing a crony for a substantive posting. For goodness sake, it's hard to imagine where a schlub could do MORE damage. Make him the VP or the freaking Commerce Secy, but CIA?! What little we know about the domestic agenda Obama campaigned on came from the Panetta Institute (next Sylvia Panetta will be the Sec Def). The only thing even close was the Iraq Study Group, and he was worthless political fluff in that regard too. Really shocking. This might be the one good confirmation hearing we get.

So, please excuse my naiveté, but, um, exactly HOW are all these appointments furthering Bambi's "change" platform? "Yes we can"... can what - go backwards? Just kinda curious...

Let's hope they do a better job keeping an eye on al Qaeda this time around.
  • Bill Dupray
likely because Commerce is viewed as an unimportant position

    Tell that to Ron Brown.
  • incredibly astute, roland. exactly right (left).
  • Roland
    Rice Pudding!

"Comfort food" appointments of old DC hands that all the media and "cocktail party" crowd know and like to sooth and distract from the new, exotic, corrupt, and radical of ObaMao himself. The fit to the job is meaningless as long as all the "right", actually left, people have known them for decades.

There must have been one heck of a deal cut between Hill, Bill, and Bambi...
That's a good one to keep the conspiracy theorists happy and busy; must be the Illumanati (!) at work---hee hee
  • i am just astounded at the depth of control the clintons are exercising on young mr. bambi. i just don't get it. from two days at the convention to SOS to filling all his seats.

how is panetta going to work with hillary after the trashing he did of her? this is just a remarkably naive administration coming in. painful to watch.
  • civis americanus
Please, Clyde; tell me you're joking... I'm begging here - just when I think it's safe to go on-line...
Panetta couldn't even solve the mystery behind the Monica Lewinsky affair, and now he's going to be in charge of the CIA and national security? He couldn't tell when Bill Clinton was lying, and he's going to be the nation's #1 spy-master???
A little part of me is dying with every new announcement like this one.
I know we all have to keep our chins up - and fight, fight, fight - but I'm beginning to understand why Doug MacArthur wanted to just "fade away"...
  • it's a great point. richardson was a governor - maybe some overlap with commerce, but not his specialty. hillary as SOS? remember the fiasco with ireland? she did nothing and claimed everything.

this really is a matter of having the names first, and then matching them to jobs.
  • Seriously? Apparently, the Obama team is more interested in putting certain people in the Administration than they are in ensuring that they are the right fit for that job. To use another example, even ignoring the federal investigation of Gov. Richardson, can someone explain to me how he was even remotely appropriate for Commerce? The question was overlooked, likely because Commerce is viewed as an unimportant position, but if the President isn't going to look for the best fit for the job, why does he have appointment power at all?
