I just concluded a conference call with Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA), Rep. Lynn Jenkins (KS), Rep. Michele Bachmann (MN), and Rep. Cynthia Lummis (WY). From private industry was Sandy Applet (CPA working with small businesses), Terry Niece (small business consultant), and Kelly Brewer (hospital administrator. The topic was the Pelosi health bill and its impact on Americans.

“This health-care bill shackles the people, and frees up the government to interfere in our lives.” Just the opposite of the US Constitution.

The full audio is here – it runs about 40 minutes:

The health-care rally today on the Hill had 10 to 15 thousand attendees, with many still roaming the halls seeking out congressfolks. It was stated again that perhaps Pelosi does not have the votes.

The first part of the discussion was focused on the impact on small business. The mandatory minimum contributions or 8% penalty will result, it was claimed, is a fundamental shift in the industry from hiring employees to hiring independent contractors. It was asserted that much of the entrepreneurial foundation of American industry could be taxed out of existence.

I asked about the top three fixes the hospital administrator would like to see to the existing Medicare/caid programs. Reply: Rates do not always cover the cost of care; enrollment and payment mechanisms are so complex as to result in lengthy delays; and there needs to be a better communication system to resolve problems in a timely fashion.

I then asked if the Pelosi bill corrected any of these. Rep. Loomis stated that with $500 billion being removed from Medicare, that reimbursements could only get worse. She also stated that the bill included a provision for simplification, but that she had little confidence it would be effective.
