ESTABLISHED: South Carolina Is A Fetid Swamp Even By Political Standards–UPDATED

Stories like these make me hate politics more than I normally do. And most days, I really hate politics. It is a nasty, necessary business. In South Carolina’s case, their political culture stinks to high heaven. Another political aid comes forward with no proof making an allegation against Nikki Haley. I wonder if he’s carrying her baby?

Allahpundit lays out all the coincidences in a must-read piece, if you want to throw up in your mouth. Here’s part of it:

Funny coincidence one: The author of that AP story is Jim Davenport, the same reporter who showed up in Will Folks’s archive of text messages sniffing around for dirt on Haley. Funny coincidence two: Marchant resigned earlier today from his position as a consultant to … Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who also happens to be the guy Erick Erickson suspects of coordinating with Folks to take down Haley before the gubernatorial primary. And now a question: Assuming that Bauer knew what Marchant was planning to say, and in light of the fact that Bauer declined to press Haley about the affair allegations at last night’s debate, why didn’t he refuse Marchant’s resignation and tell him to keep his fat mouth shut instead? Does anyone not think Bauer’s fingerprints are all over this?

And of course, I had linked to Stacy McCain before, but he has this very interesting tidbit in his updates:

7:45 p.m. ET: A South Carolina reader sends me this photo:

According to the reader, this shows Bauer’s campaign bus parked in front of Larry Marchant’s office at 4 p.m. Wednesday — four hours after Marchant supposedly resigned from the campaign.

Say this about South Carolina Republicans: They’re world champions at campaign shenanigans.

Personally, I think both the Barrett and Bauer campaigns have a lot to gain by taking out Nikki Haley. But the fingerprints are on the Bauer campaign.

Will any of these people implicated get a job ever again? Probably. It’s like they’re Democrats or something.

Oh, and just as an aside, Nikki Haley has a family; and her family, her children, hear these stories. These political operatives show an absolute callous disregard for her life. A friend of mine mentioned the deep misogyny involved here and that Will Folks, in particular, has a history of misogyny and objectification of women in both his writing and his actions.

Where are the feminists? Oh right, she’s a Republican.

We want decent people to enter public life, but only snakes seem suited for this business. We all suffer for this.

UPDATED:

And lookie here, the Barrett campaign is the one shopping the story. Hmmm…wonder if Wesley Donehue is involved? Again?

Marchant said he revealed the relationship to his pregnant wife last week after conservative blogger Will Folks made his own claim, without proof, that he had an “inappropriate physical relationship” with Haley in 2007. He said he informed Bauer “at the end of last week” after reporters began chasing rumors about the alleged tryst.

Haley’s campaign rejected Marchant’s allegation as “a false and outrageous desperate attack from a losing candidate’s paid campaign consultant in the final week of the race.”

“As Nikki Haley rises in the polls, the good old boys in Columbia see their taxpayer-funded fraternity party coming crumbling down, and they will say or do anything to hold onto their power,” said Haley campaign manager Tim Pearson. “This is South Carolina politics at its worst. The people of our state deserve better, and when Nikki Haley is Governor, they’ll get it.”

Haley’s campaign questioned Marchant’s credibility, pointing out his financial stake in the Bauer campaign and his arrest in Columbia last December on DUI charges.

Marchant said he has had “very little contact” with Haley since she announced her gubernatorial bid last year. He did say, however, that he sent her a text message after Folks made his accusation last week “saying I thought she handled it very well.”

Along with Haley and Bauer, Attorney General Henry McMaster and Rep. Gresham Barrett are also seeking the GOP gubernatorial nod.?

An adviser to the Barrett campaign, which has been accused of shopping the affair rumors about Haley, sent a story about the new allegation to reporters shortly after the news broke Wednesday.

A woman taking out two good old boys? No wonder they’re all working to bring her down.

And by the way, I want to mention what an absolute treasure you are Melissa. I have been covering this “affair” since it first broke, and I have read at least a dozen male blogger's details of the situation, but none of us meatheads have been able to put this story in the same perspective as you did here. No one else is mentioning how this is affecting Nikki's kids. No one else has noticed the absence of protests from the feminists. Bravo.

Following this deplorable saga in Pennsylvania. Melissa has stated exactly what many of our sex have been thinking – Haley's children are old enough to at least ask questions. This is really too much of a burden to place on an 8 and 11 year old. If Haley's opponents are so insensitive to her children, how will their policies reflect this callous disregard in the event they are elected to high office?
South Carolina, your children deserve better than the low lifes attacking Nikki Haley.
