Death of a Corvette, Clunker style
I am not a big car buff. I can certainly appreciate all manner of vintage models, high-end machines, and cool designs, but it is not in my blood. But like anything people are passionate about, incidents that seem to be no-big-deal to ordinary folks are positively painful for aficionados. And while we thoroughly shredded the economically perverted and ridiculous Cash for Clunkers program in this post, and showed a video on how they kill these cars, I came across this one and had to post it.
This again shows what a wasteful program C4C really is. The Vette starts its death throes at about the 3:00 mark and by 4:00 the thing is belching so much pollution, it probably exceeds Al Gore’s monthly carbon footprint.
Car lovers will want to sit down. Warning – some language.
H/T to DriverSide.

There are two things to consider –
First the Corvette was a C4 vintage, built between 1985 and 1996, from a GM design staff inspired by the likes of Roger B. Smith (who single-handedly destroyed the soul of GM). No one really liked the C4 models – they were ugly, poorly executed, and very difficult to get into or out of, and uncomfortable to drive for more than about a mile. Still, it is another ‘Vette lost to bureacracy.
Secondly, as alluded to by the author, the mass of pollutant gases including toxins emitted into the air by this 5 minutes of death throes probably was greater than would be emitted by the car during the remainder of its life, so the net benefit to the environment was nil.
The ‘Vette was probably traded in as a spiteful act by some tree-hugging wench who got it in a divorce settlement.
Sorry guys the vette does not qualify for cash for clunkers. The milage rating is to high and the resale value exceeds the $4500.00 rebate
Passenger Automobile (must have an mpg* of 18 or less)
*mpg requirements are based on EPA’s published new combined city/highway ratings.
The only Vette in that time frame that I can find that has a “combined” less than 18 mpg is the twin turbo callaway. And possibly (its debatable) a few rare combinations of the 1980 models.
Regardless the bluebook trade in is anywhere from $6,000.00 to $15,000.00 why take $3,500.00 not many people are that stupid.
Note: Does that look like a dealership or dealership emplloyees to you?
My opinion its just a stunt for someone getting a new engine in thier vette.
the actual truth-
Go to the official CARS program web site:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/CarsSearchIntro.shtml
All models of 1991 and 1993 vettes qualify, according to my very brief search. I didn’t bother to check other C4 model years.
This may be a stunt, but they seemed to be talking about ruining other cars during the commentary.
Cash for Clunkers. Who created such a stupid ass program? Oh, yeah. That asshole in the Whitehouse was the daddy of this program. And anyone who would waste a Corvette in Obama’s Cash for Clunkers program is a bigger douche bag than our president.
