Dear Congressman, I am Writing To Tell You Where to Stick The Energy Tax Bill Tomorrow

The big House vote on the National Energy Tax, a.k.a, Knee-Cap and Trade is tomorrow. Clyde is doing the painful duty of examining the bill’s entrails and pointing out the lowlights you need to know about here.

But today is the day to take action to stop it. And while the rules in the House make it virtually impossible for the Republicans to shoot out the tires on this jalopy, those of us represented by moderate Democrats, especially southern Democrats and coal-state Democrats, should still pick up the phone and make a call.

Look at it this way. Americans who support the bill assume it will pass and will not contact their representatives to push for it. Those of us who know the bill is a train wreck need to be the ones flooding the phone lines telling them to vote “No.” And when you start to think that your Democrat will never vote against this thing, you may be right, but politics, like everything else, is a mind game. If they vote for the tax in the face of thousands of constituents’ calls and emails against it, they will worry much more about a backlash than if nobody called at all.

So here is a site where you plug in your state and zip code and you can find your Representative’s phone number and email contact form. Give him or her a call, then send a follow-up email. I’ll make it easy for you. Cut and paste in this letter, be sure to add your congressman’s name at the top and yours at the bottom and you are ready to go. This went to Congressman Gerry Connolly (D. Va.) this morning.

Dear Congressman _____________________,

I write to express my grave concerns about the Cap and Trade bill that is to be voted on in the House tomorrow. Though I could write volumes about it, allow me to make a few points.

First, whether one believes that man-made global warming has any appreciable effect on the planet is really irrelevant to this issue. The fact is that this bill is a massive energy tax, plain and simple. As with any tax, it will hurt Americans’ ability to provide for their families, especially with unemployment approaching 10%. Moreover, such a large, nationwide business tax will also immediately cost existing jobs with only the hope of a new “green” job to replace it – someday.

While those disastrous consequences are sufficient enough reasons to vote against the bill, the critical one is that there is no way to prove that these huge, painful taxes will have any effect whatsoever on the temperature of the planet. When Americans are taxed for the purchase of a new fire truck or fighter jet, they may disagree with the tax, but at least they can see what they got for their hard earned money. But all of the data indicate that the planet has been in a cooling phase for 10 years, so there isn’t even any global warming going on. So how do we tell whether the new law is working? When do we cut back the tax? We can’t and we won’t. It will be a permanent job killer and families will suffer. America’s economy will be permanently hobbled.

Please vote “No” on the Cap and Trade bill tomorrow. The enactment of that bill will cause incalculable pain for every American and we will have nothing at all to show for our sacrifice.

Very truly yours,

I've emailed our senators, as Clyde (as usual) was dead on the money. Here's the short-and-lazy version:

I urge you to vote against the "Cap and Trade" bill recently passed by the House of Representatives. While I am committed to policy that protects the environment when that policy is carefully considered and based on sound science, this legislation fails to meet that test. It is nothing short of a massive tax increase, and a regressive one at that. Virginians surely do not need more of a burden on household budgets in these times. I am deeply concerned that this juggernaut of legislation will be well-nigh impossible to reconsider or revoke, and I am particularly troubled at the apparent and entirely unwarranted rush to enact it.
Please vote "no" on cap and trade.
    Sincerely,
  • Justin
I'm sure they are on the way. I already told my gf to not be suprised if I get arrested.

Yep. The Goon Squad will be there any minute. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

    Way to go Justin.
I am in the process of sending him a letter also. Pretty much along those same lines. I am thoroughly fed up!!!!!

I just launched one hell of a letter to the White House...I broke down basic economics into pre-school terminology for him so maybe he could understand that anytime new taxes are imposed, or existing taxes are raised...it is detrimental to the economy. I also used that opportunity to take a jab at him over NK and Iran...said that he looked like a chihuahua with it's tail tucked between it's legs in his handling over those totalitarian states...I think I even threw in a "grow a pair and act like a man" in there. The PC police are gonna knock down my door any minute...

The real battle is in the Senate. The House is probably lost. IF it is defeated in the House tomorrow, it would be an incredibly hard slap at O and Pelosi. The best I am hoping for is a close vote with lots of defectors.
