Circling the Drain: Only 5 Connecticut Residents Donate to Dodd

Talk about having a meeting with all your friends in a phone booth (do they even have phone booths any more?). Dodd looks to be about as popular as a pedophile in a day-care center.

From the Connecticut Post.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd appears to have looked everywhere but his home state to fuel what pundits anticipate will be one of the most hotly contested races in the nation in 2010.

The five-term incumbent reported raising just $4,250 from five Connecticut residents during the first three months of the year while raking in $604,745 from nearly 400 individuals living outside the state.

While incumbents often turn to special interests for early campaign fundraising, Dodd’s out-of-state total seems unusually high and comes at a time when he has been plagued by poor approval ratings among state voters. [me - ya think?]

Here is Dodd’s spin doctor’s take on the haul.

Indeed, Dodd’s campaign manager, Jay Howser, touted the first quarter fundraising effort as evidence of grassroots support based on the senator’s work on behalf of Connecticut residents.

“Sen. Dodd is extremely grateful for the support he has received from the hundreds of individuals who donated to the campaign. This lays a solid foundation to build a strong, grassroots campaign that will remind the people of Connecticut that Sen. Dodd has been fighting on their side and will continue to fight on their behalf,” Howser said.

That’s grass-roots support? Five Connecticut residents? That’s five supporters away from zero support of any kind from his own constituents.

This guy is a crooked, bloated, sitting duck. With a recent poll showing Dodd trailing Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons by 16 points, if the Republicans can’t knock him off next year they ought to find another line of work.

Even Democrats are losing their patience with these crooks. They pay taxes too....unless they are leftwing politicians, in which case they really don't.
  • No, of course my point wasn't that Dodd himself wasn't going to be re-elected, or I would have offered you 2:1 odds instead of even money.

Your pessimism has clouded your judgment so far that you have completely forgot 1994. The country is much angrier than it was in 1994, and a much greater percentage of middle America leans slightly red to begin with than it did then. Or did you sleep through Wednesday?

The same even odds are available on your claim that Dems will increase their leads in the Senate and Congress. Things will have to improve dramatically for the Dems to even keep control of the House in 2010, in my opinion.
  • Declan,

I know that you are frustrated, and so am I. My only hope, and yes, it may be naive, but it's all we have left, is that people FINALLY wake up!

I have written here, and at other sites, that the key to all of this misery is the lack of education of our population. The democrats high-jacked the education system decades ago, and unfortunately that move is still paying dividends. American history is given only a cursory review in public schools, and civics doesn't even exist. The sad truth is that very few students even know who or why this wonderful repulic was created. They do not understand how and why the power grab by democrats is so destructive to their liberty and freedom.

I firmly believe that conservatives have GOT to be vigilant in taking back our schools and the education of its citizens. I also believe that we have to be militant in defending ourselves against the onslaught of dishonest and negative hyberbole spouted by the left. Part of the reason George Bush (and in essence Republicans) took such a beating was because he NEVER stood up for himself. Democrats lie. They lie often. They continue to repeat those lies, and pretty soon those lies become fact to the pathetic sheeple who don't know how to think for themselves.

I do my part my talking to family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. I do my research and I arm myself with facts. Little by little, I believe that I chip away at some of the lies being regurgitated by our media, and get through to some of those neighbors and strangers (I already have the family and friends). If I could find a job teaching, I would trade my very decent paying sales job and do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, due to the disgusting budget mess, brought on by greedy politicians, my hard-earned education is wasted.

I mean honestly, can you think of a more corrupt politician? Obama may be a Marxist, but there is no evidence he has taken a bribe, for example (though I thing Dodd would be a less dangerous president for the country). I think the other commenter Declan is both wrong and right: Dodd will lose if he runs (Declan doubts it), but I think the Dems will pull a Torricelli before that happens (Declan is right about that).

That is a good letter to the editor. I don't know the CT Post, but I am surprised they published it.

    Scott,

The link that you furnished as the proof text of my naivete reinforces my point with extra strong concrete reinforcement bars. If you scroll to the bottom of that post you'll see a link to a 2002 NY Times article reporting the fate of Toricelli's US Senate re-election bid. The "Torch" was steeped in corruption charges as dem after dem after dem was for years. It was the perfect storm to finally elect a single fine, squeaky clean business man Forrester. What did the Dems do? They illigally replaced Toricelli at the last minute with retired liberal left wing commie Frank Lautenberg. Forrester challenged this illegal but typical Democrat manuever in the Liberal Democrat State Supreme court. Care to guess the outcome Scott? Right on. The lawless democrat court voted right along party lines to allow the creepy Lautenberg to get on the ballot. Result - Landslide victory for the corrupt and left wing Democrats. Keep in mind that the World Trade Center was still smouldering in ruins and Forrester ran a last minute campaign against Lefty Lautenberg that reminded NJ voters that he spent a lifetime in opposition to every military / national defense program that left the country vulnerable to attack. He also voted against Gulf War one.

So the Dems will take a wait and see approach with Dodd. If he looks like he might lose a tight one, then watch for a retirement announcement in the primaries. Either way, they will keep the seat and expand their majorities.

I'm pretty sure that you won't even try to claim that your "big picture" point is that Chris Dodd himself won't get re-elected. That would embarrass yourself and insult my intelligence. The whole spirit of this disussion is that the liberal and lawless majority of Conn. outnumber us law and order conservatives. This man is at the eye of the corruption storm that wrecked the entire global economy. He and the Democrats will emerge from this intact. You know it, I know it.

And hey, I may be pessimisstic but you're in denial.

    Declan.
  • But feel free to put your money where your mouth, and your pessimism which needs to go away, is. I'll lay even odds Dodd doesn't get re-elected.
  • Declan
The author is naive and so are the commenters. Chris Dodd is no different than any other Democrat in the country. Connecticut is a solid blue state. He will win his re-election and the Democrats will expand their majorities in both houses. When the voters of Conn. consider the alternative - pro life, traditional marriage, low tax, limited govt. strong military, school vouchers, law and order judges, anti crime, anti welfare, pro family, pro business, pro America, pro traditional religious values, all of this will be too much to bear. Take it to the bank. I speak from experience. I'm from NJ, we don't have the numbers to ever win again in this state. We're just outnumbered. "Torch" Toriccelli, Mcgreevey, Lautenburg, the most corrupt state in America and the Democrats just keep prospering beyond their wildest dreams. Did anybody notice that Jerimiah Wright just got elected president of the USA over War Hero John Mccain?
  • Jennifer, thanks for posting that for those of us who missed it.

    Truly awesome.
  • Bill,

I loved this article for two reasons: 1) it points out how out of touch our politicians are with their own constituents and 2) one of the letters to the editor at the end of the Conneticut Post story. (If you don't mind me pasting this here, I truly believe that this is the KIND of letter we should all be sending to our editors when challenging our politicans. It is well written, fact laden and speaks softly, but carries a big bang.

    Senator Dodd,

I know that you or someone in your office is going to read this. Please take what I am going to say very seriously.

You took bribes. You took bribes on more than one occasion.

1 You took a sweetheart mortgage as a “friend of Angelo” from country wide mortgage.

2 You “bought” for less than $200,000 dollars a piece of property in Ireland that has more than 200 acres, which had an actual worth of several times that amount.

3 Your partners in the above mentioned Ireland deal, allowed you to “buy them out” for considerably less than the property is worth.

4 You were the single largest receiver of bribes from AIG, for which you inserted wording in the stimulus package to allow them to keep multimillion dollar payoffs. You then denied doing so, and attempted to blame it on your staff.

5 You accepted illegal campaign contributions from foreign governments in violation of US law from the then Sandinista government of Nicaragua and also from the Peoples Republic of China.

In addition to taking bribes you have behaved in a shameful manner

1 You along with Senator Ted Kennedy engaged in sexual assault/harassment on waitress, in that you forced yourselves on her to make a “waitress sandwich”, by pressing her between your bodies in a public place.

2 You, and members of your staff did commit acts of vandalism in a doughnut shop amounting to an excess of 10,000 dollars worth of damage during a drunken “food fight”. After which you skipped out without paying the bill.

You either are so stupid that you do not understand that you are not supposed to take bribes, or you think that we are so stupid that we will not care that you take bribes. John Roland made a similar mistake.

It is my understanding sir that of the 1.4 million dollars you have raised for your election effort only five contributors were from CT and they contributed less than 5,000 dollars.

Christopher Dodd, you are a disgrace. You disgrace your family. You disgrace the memory of your father, a fine upstanding man who was a prosecutor in the Nuremburg trials. You disgrace the people of the state of Connecticut. I can understand how people can call for your head on a pike, but I do not do that. I do not want you dead. I just want you out of government By all that is decent, by all that is just, by all that is right, do one last honorable thing. Resign. Have you at long last no shame. Is there no sense of honor left in you at all? Go. Just go. Take your money and trouble us no more.
