California to Outlaw Black Cars
When the first Model T rolled off the assembly line, Henry Ford was asked what colors were available, to which he famously quipped, “You can get it in any color you want as long as it is black.” A century later, California, the Mother of all Nanny States, is telling its citizens they can have any color they want as long as it is not black, or any other dark color, for that matter. You see, you thoughtless dark car owners are killing the planet because your car uses too much energy to cool the passengers. So it’s light colored cars for the lot of you.
In a move that will likely get California’s consumers in a huff, impending legislation may soon restrict the paint color options for Golden State residents looking for their next new vehicle. The specific colors that are currently on the chopping block are all dark hues, with the worst offender seemingly the most innocuous color you could think of: Black.
What could California possibly have against these colors, you ask? Apparently, the California Air Resources Board figures that the climate control systems of dark colored cars need to work harder than their lighter siblings – especially after sitting in the sun for a few hours. Anyone living in a hot, sunny climate will tell you that this assumption is accurate, of course. In fact, legislation already exists for buildings that has proven successful at reducing the energy consumption of skyscrapers.
So what about a red Corvette? Too dark? How about burgundy, or are we stuck with pink? And what about visitors to California? Will Grandpa have to pay a sin tax on his navy blue Cadillac when he visits from Nevada? With all of California’s existing restrictive fuel economy standards on large cars, and now color restrictions on the cars you can buy, it seems that in California you can buy any car you want, as long as it is one of these.

Freedom is Number 1 on the endangered species list in the Golden State.

Is this a joke? It sure sounds like one. This state is becoming an absurdist play in real life. I have read a lot of stupid ideas but this one has got to take the cake.
What a Hellhole California has become. And that hacks me off because people are moving to other states and spreading all that intellectual pollution!
I’d be interested in seeing the exact scientific analysis that leads people to think that there is going to be enough reduction in whatever the heck they’re wanting to reduce (apparently fuel usage, hence CO2, hence supposedly global warming) to justify messing with the basic freedom to choose one’s car color. I suspect some biased ulterior-agenda-seeking “think tank” or other organization.
Even granting ….. wouldn’t the better option be to simply inform people of their potential extra costs, both to themselves and their environment, of having a dark colored car, and letting them DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES?
I know personally that I always prefer a white car living in a tropical high sun area, although it’s mainly to avoid getting into an oven — I doubt my overall mileage is that much better. I don’t need over-arching legislation to help me with this decision — legislation that may indeed be good in-and-of-itself, but can’t help but contribute to the undeniable erosion of previously enjoyed simple little freedoms, like choosing car color and having a shower head that puts out a decent flow.
We don’t outlaw smoking — we educate people and they gradually make better decisions. But they are — THEIR decisions. Isn’t that most basically what America is supposed to be all about?
Fine. Great.
If we’re in the business of metering expensive behavior, no more Medicaid, Medicare, SCHIP or publicly funded healthcare (or publicly subsidized health insurance) of any kind for: the obese, smokers, drug users, people who don’t exercise three times a week, alcoholics and people who have unprotected sex. There. I just solved the health care problem and the perpetrators are paying the tab.
I also want the salary of any recording artist that glamorizes violence, abuse of women or drugs capped at $50,000.00 a year, and the rest of the money used for inner-city schools. Education problem solved, perpetrators paying tab. You’re welcome.
Third, I want anyone with a college degree who says “the reason is because” on national television to pay me $500, just because it infuriates me. So President Obama, please send cash; you’re running up the credit cards so fast I’m not sure I want your check.
They’re spreading something. Intellectual may be going a bit far.
